THE PREDICTION

World number two Daniil Medvedev can become the world number one this week for a first time if he significantly betters Novak Djokovic’s result at the Paris Masters. The 25-year-old won his first Grand Slam title at the US Open back in September by beating Djokovic in straight sets, with only Botic van de Zandschulp able to take a set off him all tournament. Medvedev is the defending champion here in Paris from 2020 with a superb record at ATP 1000 level, claiming his fourth Masters title at the Canadian Open back in August. World number 46 Ilya Ivashka put in a solid display in the first round of the Paris Masters to beat Albert Ramos-Vinolas in straight sets on Monday. The Belarussian has enjoyed a breakthrough year on tour in which he won his first ATP title at the Winston-Salem Open.

Daniil Medvedev was caught could by an insatiable Grigor Dimitrov at Indian Wells last month but he looked otherwise solid as a newly-crowned Grand Slam champion. The Russian badly wants the number one spot and that motivation alone should power him through the first few rounds of the Paris Masters. He should be able to start the defence of his title in straight sets against Ilya Ivashka.
