THE PREDICTION

World number 30 Grigor Dimitrov started well and finished better against Richard Gasquet but the ever-popular Frenchman did make things difficult to take it to a decider. Dimitrov’s recent form has been hugely encouraging for tennis fans everywhere after the Bulgarian has spent several years largely in the wilderness. The former world number three made the semi-finals of Indian Wells last month with wins over Daniil Medvedev and Hubert Hurkacz and that should see him perform well again on similarly slow hardcourt conditions. World number 31 Karen Khachanov was altogether more assure din his straight-sets win over Mikael Ymer, The 25-year-old was at the top of his game here in 2018 to win his inly Masters title to date but he too has recently found some good form after a tough couple of years on tour.

This should be a great battle between the world number 30 and 31 with both Dimitrov and Khachanov comfortable on their baselines. On very recent form the Bulgarian can be favoured to sneak through but Khachanov clearly has an affinity with the Paris Masters that he will be keen to exploit. Dimitrov was the winner of their only previous encounter almost exactly a year ago at the Vienna Open but with both men in much better shape here this could go down to the wire. Take either of Dimitrov to win at least a set or for this match to see three sets and leave the winner up to chance.
