THE PREDICTION
Paris Masters fourth seed Alexander Zverev got his campaign underway with a solid enough straight-sets victory over an impressive Dusan Lajovic on Wednesday. The German has won five Masters titles at four events, with his second at Madrid coming earlier this season, but his playstyle suits the conditions in Paris and it would be a surprise to see him retire without taking the trophy here at least once in his career. Alongside the Madrid title, Zverev has also won the Mexican Open and Cincinnati Masters this year as well as a Gold Medal at the Tokyo Olympic Games. He also took Novak Djokovic to five sets before defeat in the semi-finals of the US Open back in September. World number 30 Grigor Dimitrov came back from a set down to beat Karen Khachanov on Wednesday in his second three-set victory of the campaign. The Bulgarian suddenly burst into form at Indian Wells last month before losing out to the eventual champion Cam Norrie in the semi-finals.
In November 2017 this tie would have been third versus fourth with Grigor Dimitrov at the top of his game winning the ATP Finals. A year later, Alexander Zverev took that year-end honour for the crowning achievement of his young career until the Gold Medal this summer in Tokyo. The pair have not faced each other on tour since 2016, with Zverev winning twice that year at two Masters events to go 2-1 ahead in their head-to-head record. The German has been almost unplayable this Autumn but Dimitrov can win this if he emulates his best, world-beating performance from Indian Wells last month. With that a big if, take Zverev as the outright winner here.
