THE PREDICTION

Andy Murray looked in good shape against Dan Evans in an all-British tie on day one of the Mubadala Tennis Championship, breaking his opponent twice in each set for a straight-sets win. The 34-year-old commented after the exhibition on this enticing semi-final between “two old guys” and it will certainly be a match steeped in history with 35-year-old Rafael Nadal leading their head-to-head record 17-7. Murray was the winner of their last encounter, on clay of all surfaces, way back at the 2016 Madrid Open but plenty has changed for both legends of the sport since then. Current world number six Nadal is on the road to recovery from a long injury layoff that has kept him from playing competitively since August and that factor is likely to see this exhibition encounter fall Murray’s way as the man with vastly more match practice behind him from the last few months.

Nadal is unlikely to push himself all the way should things get hard as he gears up for a full assault on next year’s tour and with Murray already in form in Abu Dhabi take the Brit to reach the final.
