THE PREDICTION

Silicon Valley Classic’s first seed Elise Mertens was in a battle with Kristina Mladenovic in the round of 16 but she ultimately came through in three sets. Both the Belgian and her next opponent Yulia Putintseva have travelled from disappointing Olympic Games but Mertens enjoyed great success before that with a Women’s Doubles Grand Slam title at Wimbledon last month. This looks finely poised with both players winning one hard court match against the other, Putintseva most recently winning in three sets against Mertens at the Qatar Open last season. However, the top seed is normally a consistent performer against those ranked below her and Putintseva will have to put in one of her best performances this year to beat the Belgian comfortably. Take Mertens to win outright here or for at least a set within an accumulator.
