THE PREDICTION

This promises to be a fierce first meeting between home favourite Danielle Collins and in-form Elena Rybakina, who simply does not let up on tour. The 22-year-old only just lost out on a Bronze Medal at the Olympic Games before flying out to California as the second seed of the Silicon Valley Classic and she recovered from an early wobble to beat Claire Liu in three sets in the round of 16. The world number 20 will have her work cut out here against the seventh seed Collins, though, after the American put in one of her best performances for some time to beat Sloane Stephens in three sets, also coming back from a set down. The 27-year-old won her first ever WTA title at the Palermo Open last month without dropping a set and she could be gearing up to do something special at the incoming US Open. On this day, however, Rybakina looks the strongest of two very capable winners. For that reason take the Kazakh to win at least a set in this one.
