THE PREDICTION

19-year-old Jannik Sinner ,made it all the way to the Miami Open Masters final last time out on debut and started his debut campaign here in Monte-Carlo in much the same form. The Italian beat Albert Ramos-Vinolas, a former finalist here, in straight sets and in doing so has set-up one of the biggest matches of his young career. World number one Novak Djokovic will play in his first tournament since winning his ninth Australian Open back in February and the Serb could be a little vulnerable in this first match on clay this season. 33-year-old Djokovic is currently the reigning champion of three Masters events as the 2019 winner of the Madrid Masters and last year’s Cincinnati Open and Rome Masters. The Serb has two Monte-Carlo titles to his name and is a resident here used to a strong support so without that and any real clay-court practice, the likelihood of Jannik Sinner finding a way to snatch a set off the world number one is really enticing. Djokovic should win this match, though, and the most likely outcome remains a straight-sets victory. However, Sinner will be up for this in a big way and it would not be a surprise to see him force a decider before losing.
