THE PREDICTION
World number nine Diego Schwartzman needs a string result here to prove to everyone in the raw he is a serious threat to the title here in Monte-Carlo. It would be remiss to call the Argentine a clay specialist with his overall game so strong but it is certainly his best surface and he has one clay title to his name already this season having won his native Buenos Aires Open last month. The 28-year-old looked in decent form at the Miami Open two weeks ago before an inspired Sebastian Korda knocked him out there but he should be confident of winning this tough encounter against Casper Ruud, over whom he shares a healthy 4-0 head-to-head record. 22-year-old Ruud is very much a clay specialist and won the Buenos Aires title last season for his first and so far only ATP title. He ousted rising Danish star Holger Rune in confident fashion here on Tuesday and will be well up for this challenge against the seventh seed. With clay practice in both players’ legs, this should be an incredible battle and a must watch on Wednesday as part of an excellent order of play. Take Schwartzman to win this match outright, which is not the most exciting conclusion but the only one that can be made in some confidence between two excellent players in form.
