THE PREDICTION

World number 58 Alejandro Davidovich Fokina is through to the second round of the Monte-Carlo open on his debut here and the second round of a Masters event for just the second time. The young Spaniard can blow hot and cold at times, with his round of 16 6-1, 6-1 loss at last year’s Paris Masters an example of cold and his straight-sets defeat of Alex de Minaur on Monday a great example of his potential. The 21-year-old will face Matteo Berrettini for the first time here with a real shot at the upset given that Berrettini has had little match practice on clay this season. The world number 10 reached the Sardegna Open Men’s Doubles semi-finals with his younger brother, Jacopo, last week but this will be the eighth seed’s first singles match since the Australian Open, where he was forced to pull out of the round of 16 through injury. Davidovich Fokina will be aware of his opponent’s potential rustiness and should look to exploit it but Berrettini should ultimately be too good for the Spaniard. Take Berrettini to win and at least one tiebreak in the match here with the Italian’s serve a tough one to break, though he also sometimes struggles to break others’.
