Two players who look set to be part of a new wave of Scandinavian stars will meet for the first time on tour here in a vastly interesting first round match in Monte-Carlo. 17-year-old Rune was the junior Roland-Garros champion in 2019 and clearly already belongs on the clay after reaching the quarter-finals of the Chile Open last month, beating Benoit Paire along the way. He has nothing to lose here against Norway’s Casper Ruud and should be part of a must-watch first round thriller against the 22-year-old, especially having seen fellow 17-year-old Carlos Alcaraz beat Ruud on Friday. Ruud lost in the quarter-finals of the Andalucia Open to Alcaraz on Friday but should learn from that upset and have enough to weather another onslaught from a young starlet here. Ruud to win this one in straight sets seems the likeliest outcome here.
