THE PREDICTION
World number 88 Marcos Giron was excellent in his first round match against a robust competitor in Tommy Paul, saving seven break point opportunities on his own serve to set-up a first meeting with another American in 22nd seed Taylor Fritz. World number 32 Fritz looks to have rediscovered his game over the last few months after a torrid 2020 and he has lost to the eventual winner of two of his four tournaments played so far in Novak Djokovic, over five crushing sets, and Nikoloz Basilashvili in Doha. This will be an honest and forthright second round match between two players content to slug it out at the baseline and a result is probably closer than it first appears if Giron is in the mood. Three sets looks a fairly likely option to take here and then it should be Fritz who comes through to the third round, though a Giron win would not be a total shock as he is better than his current rank.
