THE PREDICTION

World number two and the Miami Open’s first seed Daniil Medvedev looked in much better shape in his round of 16 clash with Frances Tiafoe than his previous match hampered by cramps against Alexei Popyrin. The Russian, like so many other players this fortnight, has struggled at times with the fierce humidity in Miami but his performance against an in-form Tiafoe was an impressive return to form. He faces Roberto Bautista Agut for a third time in his career, having lost to the Spaniard on both previous occasions, one four years ago in Chennai but one more notable defeat at this stage of last year’s Cincinnati Masters. There, Medvedev took the first set against world number 12 Bautista Agut before the Spaniard fought back to win in three and it was much the same story for RBA against reigning Miami Open champion John Isner. Bautista Agut took the first set before being pegged back against Isner and then overcame the American, and the best serve on tour, very impressively in a deciding tiebreak. His record against Medvedev and his form this fortnight should put him in with a chance against the Russian and yet there is the real sense that 25-year-old Medvedev has another gear or two left in him. RBA is a fierce competitor and impossibly fit, so fatigue is unlikely to concern him in this match and this could well go to three sets. However, the most reasonable outcome is that Medvedev starts turning the screw at the busines end of a Masters tournament, his specialty, and wins this in straight sets.
