THE PREDICTION

This should be a proper spectacle in Acapulco between two players likely to grace the top 10 in the world for much of the next decade, although world number 18 is not quite there yet at only 20 years old. He has, however, beaten world number five Stefanos Tsitsipas twice to share a 2-2 head-to-head record with the Greek, in fact winning their first two meetings in 2019 at Indian Wells and Queens. Since then, Tsitsipas has beaten the Canadian in the 2019 Shanghai Masters and in the final of the Marseille Open last season. 22-year-old Tsitsipas has barely broken a sweat yet in Mexico, on court at least, with two assertive straight-sets performances over some of the old guard in Benoit Paire and John Isner. Auger-Aliassime has also come through both his matches in straight sets, though in slightly trickier circumstances against Tennys Sandgren and Sebastian Korda. With their record finely poised and Tsitsipas’ loss to Pierre-Hugues Herbert in Marseille last week still fresh in the memory you could be forgiven for feeling an upset coming between the Greek first seed and seventh-seed Auger-Aliassime but it is more likely Tsitsipas can come through this match in two or three sets with at least one tiebreak between the exciting young talents.
