THE PREDICTION
World number seven Aryna Sabalenka was in control against Elise Mertens on Wednesday, her 23rd birthday, before the Belgian was forced to retire from their quarter-final match. Sabalenka lost to Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova in their only previous meeting after taking the first set at the 2019 Rogers Cup but the Belarusian is in the ascendancy this season and looks the likelier winner here. 29-year-old Pavlyuchenkova has come through some fierce competition so far in Karolina Pliskova, Karolina Muchova and Jennifer Brady and she will be by far Sabalenka’s toughest opponent so far in Madrid but the fifth seed has looked set for the final here since her loss to Ash Barty in the Stuttgart Open final last Sunday. Take Sabalenka to win outright here, though the 23-year-old has not dropped a set yet this week and winning in two is not out of the question.
