THE PREDICTION
World number six and former Madrid Masters champion Alexander Zverev put a big target on his back with an astounding, assured display in beating Rafael Nadal on Thursday afternoon. The 23-year-old enjoys the higher ball here in Madrid at altitude and clearly has pedigree at this tournament that looks ever more difficult to not back for a second title. When in this mood it is almost impossible to knock the German off the court but one man left in the draw who can, and has on eight of their 10 total meetings, is world number four Dominic Thiem. The Austrian went down a set to an impressive John Isner earlier on Thursday before rallying to take the next two but he will have to improve on that performance if he is to beat Zverev for a fifth consecutive time. What is more, Zverev has plenty of motivation for the win here having lost to Thiem in last season’s US Open final. Zverev totally capitulated that evening having gone two sets up but Thiem will not have the time he needed to complete that famous fight back in this three-set affair.
Before today’s play this would have been a wholly reasonable result to call the 27-year-old’s way but Zverev’s attitude this week is infectious and his performances imperious. Take the German to win at least a set here, or outright for a riskier pick.
