THE PREDICTION
Yoshihito Nishioka grabbed his chance as the lucky loser substituting Cam Norrie with both hands as he beat Filip Krajinovic in straight sets on Tuesday with little to no warning or preparation. However, Nishioka would have qualified for the main draw if he was not forced to retire from a qualifying match he was winning against Marcos Giron on Sunday so the Japanese will feel vindicated for his injury there. This is an altogether tougher test for the 25-year-old, though, as world number 22 Casper Ruud looked wholly impressive in his straight-sets victory over Felix Auger-Aliassime on Tuesday and the Nord will take some stopping in Madrid. Nishioka is a difficult left-hander to face but Ruud’s excellent game on this surface should be able to grind the world number 60 down. Given Nishioka’s second wind this week, it would be safest to opt for Ruud to win outright but the 22-year-old is well capable of winning in two.
