THE PREDICTION

World number 49 Alejandro Davidovich Fokina took the scenic route in his first round match to win against Pierre-Hugues Herbert from behind and via three tiebreaks in a mammoth three-set match on Tuesday. The Spaniard will be relishing the chance to play at this level in front of a home crowd and this looks like a tricky match to call as Daniil Medvedev makes his return to tour. The Russian has not played a singles match on tour since the 1st of April and has since then recovered from covid-19 so his form and fitness here are a huge question mark. Given his current form it would be a total upset for 21-year-old Davidovich Fokina to win this first meeting with the world number three but he will have to manage those expectations against Medvedev’s genius. The Russian is still the favourite but this result is far from clear-cut. Take Davidovich Fokina to win at least a set here and leave the winner up to chance.
