THE PREDICTION

This is a must-watch first meeting between two teenagers destined to compete at the very top of the game for many years to come as 17-year-old Coco Gauff faces 19-year-old Iga Swiatek in the semi-finals of the Italian Open. World number 35 Gauff has enjoyed an incredible week in Rome, beating in-form Maria Sakkari and Madrid Open champion Aryna Sabalenka but the American is through to the last four due to Ash Barty’s unfortunate injury. Gauff looked likely to lose that encounter before the world number one pulled out so that could give her the extra motivation needed to face a powerhouse of a player in world number 15 Swiatek, the current Roland-Garros champion. Swiatek beat Elina Svitolina on Saturday morning after rain washed-out Friday’s play so the Pole will have to face the adversity of playing twice in quick succession with this mid-afternoon fixture. There are plenty of outside factors making this match a more difficult call but the Pole will be favourite and taking Swiatek to win at least one set here is a wise, if pretty safe option.
