THE LOWDOWN
There are increasing signs that current world number 81 Amanda Anisimova is returning to the blistering form we saw from her back in 2019. The 20-year-old raced through to the semi-finals of Roland-Garros that year after winning her first WTA title at the Bogota Open, both on clay, but she certainly has the game for all courts. Her recent performances, including a tight defeat to Karolina Pliskova at the US Open last month, suggest the American is improving once again with a career-high of 21st looking an achievable target to emulate by this time next season. World number 38 Camila Giorgi may not reach her career-high of 26th set in 2018 but the Italian achieved a huge career goal by winning a first Masters event at the Canadian Open back in August. The 29-year-old has put in some superb performances too, most notably beating Karolina Pliskova on three separate occasions including the final in Montreal.
THE PREDICTION
This could be a sleeper hit in the second round of Indian Wells between two players who, when on song, can hit the ball as hard and clean as anyone on tour. Camila Giorgi has lost each of her last three matches since the emotional release of winning a first Masters title back in August but she will be fully dialled-in to this campaign at Indian Wells and a very tough opponent for home favourite Amanda Anisimova. The 20-year-old conceded just two games to Katrina Scott in the first round on Thursday and that coupled with Giorgi’s losing streak suggests taking her to win at least a set here is the wisest move in a first meeting between two exciting talents.
