THE LOWDOWN
World number seven Elina Svitolina dropped the first set of her third round match with in-form Sorana Cirstea but she fought back well to win a tight deciding tiebreak. The 27-year-old won her 16th career WTA title just before the US Open at the Chicago Ladies Open and she has three Masters titles amongst that bunch with a crowning-glory WTA Finals title from 2018. World number 24 Jessica Pegula is a win away from breaking her career-high of 23rd after a straight-sets victory over Jasmine Paolini. The American is the battling kind and yet to drop a set at Indian Wells, with a run to the Australian Open earlier this year and her solitary title win from the 2019 Washington Open depicting her strength on this surface.
THE PREDICTION
Pegula and Svitolina have met twice this season with the Ukrainian winning in straight sets at the Abu Dhabi Tennis Open and the American levelling things up 1-1 by winning their round of 16 clash at the Australian Open soon after. This match is finely poised to be a thriller with the backing of a partisan crowd likely to spur Pegula into taking at least a set but the eventual winner looking a tough call. Realistically, Svitolina should be the one to reach the quarter-finals but she has been guilty of taking her eyes off the prize at points this season. Pegula to win a set here seems the most viable option.
