THE LOWDOWN

19th seed Aslan Karatsev took out the ninth seed Denis Shapovalov on Monday to reach the round of 16 at a Masters event for the third time this season. The 28-year-old is yet to reach a quarter-final at this level but he exploded onto the scene at the start of the year by becoming the first qualifier this millennium to reach the semi-finals of the Australian Open. Since then, the Russian won his first ATP title at the Dubai Open and he also claimed a huge career-best victory over Novak Djokovic at the Serbia Open. World number 12 Hubert Hurkacz also reached the semi-finals of a Grand Slam for the first time this season with a stunning run to the last four at Wimbledon. The 24-year-old beat Daniil Medvedev and Roger Federer before running out of steam against an in-form Matteo Berrettini at SW19 but he claimed his third title of the season two weeks ago at the Moselle Open.

THE PREDICTION

This will be a fascinating, almost immediate rematch between Aslan Karatsev and Hubert Hurkacz after the Russian knocked Hurkacz out of this very stage of the San Diego Open last week. That day Hurkacz took the opening set before an impressive fight back from the Russian and given their performances so far at Indian Wells this looks like needing a decider once again. Eighth seed Hurkacz has been vastly impressive so far this campaign and with each passing round he looks more and more like the man to beat here. Take the Pole to win at least a set as the likelier of the two to come through.
