THE LOWDOWN
18-year-old Holger Rune looks a very bright light for Danish tennis alongside Clara Tauson, also 18. Rune is up to a career-high 124th in the ATP world rankings after reaching the Moselle Open quarter-finals last month where he beat world number 24 Lorenzo Sonego and took Pablo Carreno Busta to three sets. The teenager also took a set off Novak Djokovic in the first round of the US Open before eventually losing in four. World number 178 Ernesto Escobedo qualified well in two straight-set wins over Denis Istomin and Mikhail Kukushkin to play at Indian Wells for only the second time. The 25-year-old reached a career-high 67th in the world back in 2017.
THE PREDICTION
“Neto” Escobedo is yet another Californian in the first round of Indian Wells and he will have happy memories here after stunning Frances Tiafoe at this stage back in 2018. The 25-year-old is a long road back to somewhere inside the top 100 if he continues in his trajectory but he has drawn one of the short straws in the shape of fast-improving Holger Rune. The 18-year-old Dane won fans at the US Open last month with his performance against Novak Djokovic and he has taken that form onto the tour impressively since. Escobedo is well capable of forcing a decider here so taking the teenager to win outright seems a reasonable option.
