THE PREDICTION

This is a blockbuster first meeting between two players likely to set-up an enjoyable rivalry over the years in world number 21 Casper Ruud and world number 15 Denis Shapovalov, both 22 years old. Norway’s Rudd has been especially excellent on his favoured surface all season long and he thoroughly deserves a title for his work so far this year. He beat Pablo Andujar in straight sets on Friday after the Spaniard had taken out Roger Federer earlier this week and whilst he is the third seed in Geneva in terms of rankings he was probably the favourite for the title coming in. Shapovalov, though, is as always a huge outlier as the second seed and the Canadian has grown into this tournament with each passing match. Shapovalov took a set off Italian Open champion Rafael Nadal last week in a wonderful performance that showcased exactly what he can do when tuned in and if he reaches his best form he should be too powerful for Ruud.

However, Ruud has come this far with a consistent, explosive game on clay and he should be able to weather any flurries of excellence from Shapovalov’s racket over a likely three-set tussle. Take Ruud to win here, probably in three but it is best to opt for an outright victory.
