THE PREDICTION

This looks a must-watch third round match between two young players in their element on the clay. World number 16 Casper Ruud won the Geneva Open two weeks ago to shoot up the ATP world rankings and so far he has lived up to the hype with two convincing wins over Benoit Paire and Kamil Majchrzak. The 22-year-old will target the quarter-finals here as a benchmark for success at Roland-Garros but this is a difficult match indeed against 21-year-old Alejandro Davidovich Fokina. The Spaniard was part of an immense battle on Wednesday, eventually beating Botic Van de Zandschulp in five arduous sets but the world number 46 has the legs to bounce back from that in time for this second meeting with Ruud. The Norwegian won their first encounter over five sets too, at the 2019 ATP Next Gen Finals, and that should be the way this result falls again with sets in this for both players if they turn up. Take Ruud to win outright but an ADF victory would not be hugely surprising.
