THE PREDICTION
This is a pretty intriguing first round match between world number four Dominic Thiem and Pablo Andujar, with the Spaniard not long coming off the biggest win of his career. 35-year-old Andujar has five ATP titles to his name on clay but defeating Roger Federer at last week’s Geneva Open counts as big an achievement to the veteran and he will be targeting an even bigger scalp here, at least in terms of ranking. 27-year-old Dominic Thiem has struggled for form all season long but still managed to reach the semi-finals of the Madrid Open earlier this month and any talk of an early upset seems ill-informed. The Austrian will almost certainly win this Grand Slam one day but is struggling with the aftershock of winning his first at last year’s US Open and any motivational issues he has suffered should be forgotten as soon as he steps out on Phillippe-Chatrier. This should be an open-and-shut Thiem in three sets situation but Andujar’s form is too good not to consider the Spaniard could cause trouble throughout, so take the fourth seed to win outright here instead.
