THE PREDICTION

World number two Daniil Medvedev did himself no favours in his last tournament as he bombed out of the first round of the Italian Open whilst declaring his contempt for the clay. The Russian is simply outstanding on a hard court but clearly has little patience for this surface and he also had a month off due to covid-19 to deal with earlier this year. Matches involving the 25-year-old at Roland-Garros look set to be as entertaining as they are unpredictable and so adding Alexander Bublik, the least predictable man on tour, makes for a blockbuster of a first round match here. Medvedev was the winner when the two first met five years ago but both players have evolved since then and this will be a fresh start in terms if head-to-head records. 23-year-old Bublik also has the better form on clay this season having made the quarter-finals of the Madrid Open and the world number 37 loves to play to a crowd in these big occasions. Medvedev should still win this match, on paper, but take Bublik to win at least a set here in what should be an enthralling spectacle.
