THE PREDICTION

World number 42 Carlos Alcaraz will reach a new career-high ATP world ranking on Monday after an incredible campaign so far at the Vienna Open. The 18-year-old beat world number seven, this year’s Wimbledon runner-up no less, via a third-set deciding tiebreak. Beating Berrettini in any tiebreak is tough, Novak Djokovic has conceded two to the Italian this season, but to do it under the highest amount of pressure is simply astounding. He faces world number four Alexander Zverev, who played out a tight and interesting three-set encounter with Felix Auger-Aliassime to reach his third semi-final in four tournaments played. Zverev has won four ATP titles so far this season, with a Gold Medal at the Tokyo Olympic Games the crowning glory.

Zverev beat Alcaraz in their only previous meeting earlier this year, taking out a then 17-year-old Spanish kid in straight sets. Only months later, the 18-year-old is something altogether more incredible. The rise and rise of Carlos Alcaraz will be the subject of 2022’s tennis hype but he has already started that journey with wins over Stefanos Tsitsipas at the US Open and his emphatic defeats of Andy Murray and Matteo Berrettini here. Zverev remains the favourite here but it is testament to the teenager’s talent that the sensible line here is for Zverev to earn at least a set as the likelier of two very capable winners.
