THE PREDICTION
Two young players battling it out to qualify for the year-end ATP Finals for a first time should make an incredible match between Casper Ruud and Jannik Sinner here, one year on from their only previous meeting at this very tournament. That day an emerging Sinner was the winner in straight sets in the second round but Ruud remains the higher-ranked player on year on at a career-high world number eight after winning an incredible five ATP titles this season. The 22-year-old claimed three in a row at Bastad, Gstaad and Kitzbuhel back in the summer but winning the San Diego Open on a hard court last month proved the Norwegian to be the real deal across all surfaces. Not to be outdone, 20-year-old Sinner has added four ATP titles to his now total of five, just one behind Ruud. The Italian also has the highest-ranking title with a first ATP 500 trophy from the Washington Open and the better form as he starts this quarter-final on a six-match winning streak from his title-winning campaign at the European Open last week.
Both players have taken out strong competition so far, with Ruud getting the tougher draw in a straight-sets victory over Lloyd Harris and a three-set win over Lorenzo Sonego on Thursday. This one still looks like edging towards a so far impeccable Sinner but in what should be a thrilling battle it makes sense to pick the Italian to earn at least a set as the likelier of two very capable winners here.
