THE PREDICTION

World number two Daniil Medvedev will have thoroughly enjoyed an exciting quarter-final with Hubert Hurkacz on Friday. The Russian avenged his Wimbledon defeat last month by returning the favour in coming back from a set down to beat Hurkacz, who had done the same in the round of 16 at SW19 in another explosive encounter. There should be more where that came from over the years to come but Medvedev’s next opponent is a totally different prospect in world number John Isner, who beat Gael Monfils in straight sets to back up an excellent campaign. The 36-year-old has beaten four top players now in Alejandro Davidovich Fokina, Cristian Garin, Andrey Rublev and Monfils to reach the semi-finals in Toronto for the second time.

Isner’s form is much improved from his previous encounter with Daniil Medvedev, where the 25-year-old beat him in straight sets at the ATP Cup in 2020. Still, this close to a final at this stage of the season it is hard not to back the Russian to win not only this match but the entire competition, with one of the best records around at ATP 1000 level. Take Medvedev to win outright here as one of the players on tour most able to break Isner’s supersonic serve.
