THE PREDICTION

The re-emergence of current world number 28 Karen Khachanov as a top 10 contender continued apace in Toronto as the 25-year-old beat compatriot Aslan Karatsev in straight sets. Khachanov has been the most successful of Russia’s glut of talent over the summer after reaching the quarter-finals of Wimbledon and winning a silver medal at the Olympic Games. Confidence had clearly been lacking from Khachanov’s game over the last year or so but this fourth meeting with Stefanos Tsitsipas is hugely interesting now. World number three Tsitsipas has won all three of their previous meetings, two in straight sets at the Shanghai Masters in 2017 and 2018 as well a three-set tussle at the Rotterdam Open earlier this year.

This version of Khachanov should be more trouble to the Greek, who himself is not fully up to speed just yet despite a brilliant revenge win over Ugo Humbert on Wednesday. The 22-year-old lost from two sets up to Novak Djokovic in the final of Roland-Garros back in June and it could take a little while longer to get over that and his subsequent first round loss at Wimbledon. What is certain is that this match should be electrifying to watch. Second-seed Tsitsipas is the favourite on prestige but Khachanov has been excellent recently and this looks like needing a decider. Take Tsitsipas to win outright here but the reverse would not be a huge surprise.
