THE PREDICTION

Both world number 24 Coco Gauff and number 44 Jo Konta have had to miss out on big tournaments this summer after testing positive for covid-19. 30-year-old Konta’s self-isolation came as an especially big annoyance after the Brit missed out on Wimbledon having prepared well with a win at the Nottingham Open, whilst both players missed out on the Olympic Games due to complications concerning covid-19. 17-year-old Gauff has recently recovered and looks to have not suffered for too long with two wins so far in Montreal over Anastasia Potapova and Anastasija Sevastova. The teenager is no longer an incredible underdog story but a full-blown prodigy capable winning any tournament she enters and she will be the favourite here as the 15th seed. Konta has put herself back on the map, though, with a brilliant comeback win over recent Tokyo 2020 bronze medallist Elina Svitolina on Wednesday.

Gauff was the winner of their only previous encounter, beating Konta in the first round of last season’s delayed Roland-Garros. This should be an exciting second clash with both players well capable of reaching the quarter-finals but at this stage of the season Gauff has the much better overall form. Take the teenager to win at least a set here and leave the winner up to chance.
