THE PREDICTION

World number 12 Casper Ruud has five ATP titles to his name on clay and he has won four of those this season, with his last three all coming in a row for a current winning streak of 13 after he beat Marin Cilic here in the second round. Three sets over Cilic on a hard court is a big achievement for a player so talented yet still slightly pigeon-holed as a clay specialist. However, his form cannot be questioned and the Norwegian can prove a lot of doubters wrong with some deep runs on this hard court swing. In his way is another clay aficionado in Dusan Lajovic, who provided one of a few shocks on Wednesday in Toronto by knocking out home hopeful Felix Auger-Aliassime. Whilst the Canadian youngster has not been in dazzling form recently, Lajovic’s win is a huge break from his own poor 2021 record and the Serb will be dangerous here.

22-year-old Ruud was the winner of their only previous encounter, beating 31-year-old Lajovic in straight sets at last year’s Buenos Aires Open. World number 44 Lajovic has found a groove at the Canada Masters and that is enough to suggest a decider may be required but take Ruud to reach the quarter-finals.
