THE LOWDOWN
JAMES DUCKWORTH
- World number 105 James Duckworth looked in good form when beating qualifier Damir Dzumhur in straight sets to reach the second round of the Australian Open.
- The 29-year-old Aussie will again be well supported when he faces Felix Auger-Aliassime for the second time in Australia having lost to the 20-year-old at the Adelaide International last year.
FELIX AUGER-ALIASSIME
- World number 19 Felix Auger-Aliassime will be one to watch in the early stages of this Australian open after he breezed past Cedrik-Marcel Stebe in straight sets.
- The Canadian number three missed out on the ATP Cup campaign but made it all the way to the final of the Murray River Open where he lost his seventh ATP singles final.
THE PREDICTION
20-year-old Canadian wonderkid Felix-Auger-Aliassime should be targeting a first tour win in the singles this season after winning the Men’s Doubles at the Paris Masters last year with Hubert Hurkacz. He could struggle early-on against Duckworth, with the Aussie likely to be well supported by a loyal Melbourne crowd and with both players winning their first round matches in straight sets it will be interesting to see how they match-up. Duckworth lost to Auger-Aliassime in straight sets last season and the youngster is arguably in better form now. It is a question of whether the crowd can pull Duckworth over the line in a set or not here. It could be worth opting for a tiebreak in this match combined with an Auger-Aliassime win instead, though the Canadian should be taking this in three.
