THE LOWDOWN

MACKENZIE MCDONALD

  • World number 192 Mackenzie McDonald has matches his best-ever Grand Slam performance by reaching the round of 16 at the Australian open after an assured straight-sets victory over Lloyd Harris.
  • 25-year-old American McDonald has faced Daniil Medvedev twice before, losing in straight sets at Indian Wells and the Barcelona Open back in 2019.

DANIIL MEDVEDEV

  • 25-year-old Daniil Medvedev celebrated his birthday on Thursday with a difficult straight-sets win over Roberto Carballes Baena before going the distance against Filip Krajinovic on Saturday.
  • The world number four was two sets up and cruising against Filip Krajinovic before struggling to keep control against the 28th-seed, falling out with his coach before dominating the fifth set to love in a statement victory.

THE PREDICTION

Mackenzie McDonald has made a startling run to the second week here in Melbourne with strong performances in victories over Marco Cecchinato, 22nd-seed Borna Coric and Lloyd Harris. The American has looked more confident in each passing round and it is a real shame for the neutral that he has met Daniil Medvedev now as you feel there were other players he might have had a chance against here. As it is, Daniil Medvedev’s fury proved too strong for a patient Filip Krajinovic on Saturday and the Russian’s 6-0 final set displayed all that is best and worst about him in from an opponent’s view in one. The world number four can take his eye off the ball in five sets but after his five-set close-call against Krajinovic he is unlikely to repeat mistakes here. This is possibly the biggest match of 25-year-old McDonald’s life and the line would give him a set here, though it should be something closer to a potential tiebreak in a straight-sets win for Medvedev.
