THE LOWDOWN

MARCOS GIRON

  • 27-year-old Marcos Giron really came into his own at the end of last season with a quarter-finals place at the European Open backed-up with a round of 16 exit at the Paris Masters.
  • The world number 73 ended up with a 9-9 record for 2020 and continued in fine form this past week with two wins at the Murray River Open before losing to in-form Dan Evans.

ALEXANDER ZVEREV

  • World number seven Alexander Zverev enjoyed representing Team Germany for possibly the first time in his career despite losing two of his three singles matches to Novak Djokovic and Daniil Medvedev.
  • The 23-year-old claimed the first set against both Djokovic and Medvedev, though, and looked in good shape last season too with a runners-up place at the Paris Masters, again to Medvedev.

THE PREDICTION

After his crushing defeat in the US Open final last year, having been two sets up over Dominic Thiem, Alexander Zverev knuckled down and won back to back tournaments in Cologne as part of an impressive reaction. The German fell at the last hurdle in the final of the Paris Masters but will have been pleased with his response. He aims to emulate his semi-final place here last season, where he lost to Dominic Thiem, but Marcos Giron is no pushover and looks set to give him a difficult first round match. Hard-working Giron is the kind of player who can frustrate Zverev, especially early-on in the draw, and so both players to take a set in a Zverev victory looks a good option here.
