THE LOWDOWN

CEDRIK-MARCEL STEBE

  • World number 128 Cedrik-Marcel Stebe made it through to the second round in one of Melbourne Park’s warm-up tournaments this week before losing to Kevin Anderson in straight sets.
  • The 30-year-old German lost in the first round of the Australian Open last season in a five-set marathon defeat to Benoit Paire and only just made the cut here after losing one of his three qualifying matches.

FELIX AUGER-ALIASSIME

  • World number 21 Felix Auger-Aliassime was emphatic all the way through to the final of the Murray River Open at Melbourne Park this week before losing to an in-form Dan Evans in straight sets.
  • Felix Auger-Aliassime ended the year as an ATP Masters 1000 champion as part of an unlikely Paris Masters-winning Men’s Doubles pair with Hubert Hurkacz after three more runner-up medals in the singles in 2020.

THE PREDICTION

20-year-old Felix Auger-Aliassime lost his seventh final on tour on Saturday in defeat Dan Evans at the Murray River Open but it seems a lazy comment to suggest eh lacks a cutting edge considering he won the Paris Masters doubles alongside fellow youngster Hubert Hurkacz last November. The Canadian star will eventually convert those finals into title wins and looks to be a staple at the very top of the tour for the next decade. He could do with a better showing in a Grand Slam, though, and will hope to emulate his best showing of a round of 16 exit at last season’s US Open to the eventual champion Dominic Thiem. Cedrik-Marcel Stebe has never made it past the second round of a Grand Slam and the 30-year-old is likely to be found wanting here against an incredible talent. Auger-Aliassime should be winning this in straight sets.
