THE PREDICTION

World number 159 Botic Van de Zandschulp will make his Grand Slam debut here at 25 years old after making it all the way to the quarter-finals of the Great Ocean Road Open last week. However, all the buzz will be around a 17-year-old Grand Slam debutant in Carlos Alcaraz who has only played two tour-level matches in his career so far. The world number 136 has the full hype compliment behind him already and those in the know will be flocking to see this first round match on Tuesday with a teenage Spanish sensation something we have heard of in the not-too distant past. Alcaraz has been practising with said previous Spanish sensation, Rafael Nadal, in Melbourne and he could well explode onto the scene with a win here against Van de Zandschulp. It seems a little romantic to suggest it but these things can and have happened before. He beat David Goffin last week and Alcaraz to win this match by any means seems like the likely first round highlight here.
