THE LOWDOWN

MATTEO BERRETTINI

  • World number 10 Matteo Berrettini threw off some cobwebs in an excellent victory over world number three Dominic Thiem to level the tie with Team Austria and then went on to beat Thiem and Novak in the doubles alongside Fabio Fognini.
  • The 24-year-old won nine games in a row against US Open champion Dominic Thiem in a totally deserved shock that prove just how powerful the Italian can be when he is switched on.

GAEL MONFILS

  • 34-year-old Gael Monfils was enjoying a rich vein of form before covid-19 disrupted the 2020 season as he won the Rotterdam Open for a second successive year, following a Montpellier Open title the week before.
  • The Frenchman failed to win a match after the August restart as his fitness was called into question yet again, retiring from his fourth successive defeat at the Vienna Open last October.

THE PREDICTION

Gael Monfils won one of his two singles matches at last year’s ATP Cup before injury forced him out of the tournament and as always his fitness will be in the spotlight throughout this first match of 2021. This has all the hallmarks of an electrifying match between the raw power of Matteo Berrettini and Monfils’ crowd-pleasing, silky shot-making if their last match is anything to go by. In one previous meeting, Berrettini was able to overcome Monfils over five sets in the quarter-finals of the 2019 US Open and similar fare looks on here. It is difficult to predict anything about either player, though Monfils has not played a competitive match since October and that should see the in-form Italian come through by any means.
