THE PREDICTION

This is a final with one likely finalist in world number eight Andrey Rublev, who is aiming to win his fifth ATP title this year, and one shock, as lucky loser Lorenzo Sonego looks to complete a small miracle this week. The Italian has gone from strength to strength, and quite frankly from nowhere having lost to Aljaz Bedene in the qualifiers, but there is a touch of Daniil Medvedev’s 2019 hard court form about the 25-year-old. Sonego has already beaten the favourite for the tournament, Novak Djokovic, and carried that blistering form into his semi-final against Dan Evans, where the Brit did not much wrong in a straight-sets defeat there. The Italian will have to cope with the pressure of his first ATP 500 final here but he has played with freedom and expression all week and if he reaches the same level here he can beat Rublev. The 23-year-old Russian has been here and done it in 2020 and that experience will serve him well against Sonego’s pressure, but Rublev has now come through three rounds at the Vienna Open in which he has faced players hampered by injury and that could work against him as Sonego starts hard and fast. There are so many factors here and it could go either way.
On the one hand, it seems likely that if Sonego can shut-out the extra noise he should win the first set such is his intensity this week but there is plenty to suggest that Rublev can come back from that and go on to win. For want of a result, an Italian first set or this match going to a decider are both feasible options.
