THE PREDICTION

Diego Schwartzman came through a Roland-Garros classic against Dominic Thiem in the quarter-finals and will be desperately glad of the two-day break after that match lasted over five hours. The Argentinian was everywhere against Thiem on Philippe-Chatrier and after four intense sets he came through the decider in commanding fashion. His lengthy quarter-final meant Rafael Nadal had to play until the early morning to see off Italy’s wonderkid Jannik Sinner in eventual straight-sets to reach his 13th French Open semi-final. Tennis fans will know this means the 12-time Roland-Garros champion has never lost a match in Paris at this stage of the competition.

28-year-old Schwartzman should make the top 10 for the first time in his career after reaching his highest-ever Grand Slam stage but there is no justifiable reason for Nadal to lose this match. The world number two lost to Schwartzman in their previous meeting, his only loss to the Argentinian, suggesting Schwartzman could steal a set but all logic suggests no more than this.
