THE PREDICTION
Reigning US Open champion Dominic Thiem survived a stirring comeback from French wildcard entry Hugo Gaston in the fourth round and needed a deciding set to make it into the quarter-finals at Roland-Garros for the fifth year in succession. The Austrian can simply not afford similar lapses in concentration against his next opponent, as Diego Schwartzman looks capable of challenging anyone right now. Making it the final of the Italian Open – and notably defeating Rafael Nadal along the way – has clearly had a knock-on effect to the Argentine’s performances in Paris as he is yet to drop a single set in his four rounds so far. He will relish being the underdog here and is capable of sticking with Thiem for large periods of the match, but if Thiem plays at the top of his game then you would fancy him to progress. Given Schwartzman’s form though, this one seems unlikely to be a straight-sets win so backing Thiem to come through in either four of five sets could be the way to approach this one in the betting markets.
