THE LOWDOWN

JAN-LENNARD STRUFF

  • Jan-Lennard Struff is in excellent form at the Dubai Open and after a straight-sets victory over Roberto Bautista Agut in the first round, he dropped just one game in the round of 16 to Nikoloz Basilashvili.
  • 29-year-old Struff is just one rank away from his career-high 33rd in the world that he set last year and he is certainly one of the later bloomers on tour, with this season shaping up to be his best yet.
  • Rather surprisingly, Struff holds a positive win percentage over Stefanos Tsitsipas as he leads a 2-1 head-to-head with the Greek, with all three of those matches played last season.

STEFANOS TSITSIPAS

  • Stefanos Tsitsipas played out an exciting round of 16 match with Alexander Bublik but, after a first set tiebreak, the Greek’s nerve held strong to come through in straight sets.
  • The 21-year-old won his first ATP title of 2020 last week at the Open 13 Provence in Marseille where he also defeated Alexander Bublik before beating Felix Auger-Aliassime in the final.
  • World number six Tsitsipas made it all the way through to the final of last year’s Dubai Open before Roger Federer exacted revenge for their previous round of 16 Australian Open match that announced the Greek to the world stage.

THE PREDICTION

Jan-Lennard Struff has won the last two matches played against Stefanos Tsitsipas in three sets at the Barcelona Open and Rogers Cup on clay and hard courts, respectively. A similar outcome would not be totally out of the question here after the German’s impressive display in the previous rounds but on paper this should be a win for the Greek. It will most likely go to three sets, breaking a streak of six straight-sets wins for the 21-year-old, but he can trust in his nerve in a tiebreak.
