NOVAK DJOKOVIC
- Novak Djokovic looked close to a shock semi-final exit when Gael Monfils was a set and a break up but the Serb snatched victory from the jaws of defeat after a second-set tiebreak.
- The world number one looked out of sorts for the majority of the match but his quality shone through as the Frenchman tired after that tiebreak, wrapping up the decider 6-1.
- Djokovic won the previous match played against Stefanos Tsitsipas in the quarter-finals of the Paris Masters last year but the pair are level in their head-to-head record with two wins apiece.
STEFANOS TSITSIPAS
- Stefanos Tsitsipas looked vastly more assured in his semi-final match against Dan Evans than his previous win over Jan-Lennard Struff, breaking the Brit twice in both sets one.
- The 21-year-old Greek’s forehand was nigh-on perfect in the semi-final and complemented a 90% win on his first serve that will put him in good stead for going one better at the Dubai Open.
- World number six Tsitsipas made it through to the final here last year before losing to Roger Federer in straight sets and, while fatigue could be a factor after winning the Marseille Open just last week, Djokovic’s match was a real slog and should even that out.
THE PREDICTION
If the versions of Stefanos Tsitsipas and Novak Djokovic that played in their respective semi-finals meet in the final here, the Greek should win his first title here in Dubai. The world number six was emphatic in his match against Dan Evans and spoke of his determination to go one better than his runners-up medal last year to Roger Federer, while Djokovic was unconvincing in victory against Gael Monfils until the very end. That performance will have taken a lot out of the Serb, and the nature of their form right now suggests that if Tsitsipas can take the first set here he can go on to win, but there is no sense in siding against the world number one in a final. Djokovic won the previous final played against Tsitsipas at the Madrid Masters last year and he can take the lead in their head-to-head with a title here.
