THE PREDICTION

This is the match-up many people wanted as an almost immediate re-match to Jannik Sinner’s emphatic defeat of Alexander Zverev at the French Open earlier this month. The match proves to be infinitely interesting, as Zverev will be at his peak determination to come through this match in order to level the head-to-head record with this young Italian star, who could well be a direct rival for many years to come. 19-year-old Sinner got off to a flying start at Roland-Garros, taking the first two sets before Zverev could muster a response but the German number one knows he does not have enough time to start to poorly. Top seed Zverev has been taken to a decider in his two matches so far this week against John Millman and Adrian Mannarino, while Sinner conceded his first set to Gilles Simon in the quarter-finals yesterday.
This should come down to unquantifiable factors such as motivation – will Zverev be as eager to win here in Cologne having already done so, or, conversely, will that focus him all the more. As with most of the German’s matches, the outcome rests largely on his mentality on the day. It is hard to believe that he would succumb to the Italian again so soon and his experience on this court should serve him well if he remains hungry. This game could really go either way but Zverev's experience swings it in his favour.
