FERNANDO VERDASCO
- Fernando Verdasco produced an accomplished display as he knocked out the 26th seed Nikoloz Basilashvili in four sets but the Spaniard now faces a huge challenge to progress any further.
- Verdasco will come up against seventh seed Alexander Zverev who he will face for the fourth time but he will have to come up with a much better performance than he managed the last time the two met last season when the German won in straight sets.
- Having not made it beyond the third round in Melbourne since 2011, Verdasco will have to roll back the years against the man 14 years his junior if he is to prolong his stay in the tournament.
ALEXANDER ZVEREV
- Alexander Zverev made it back-to-back straight-sets victories as he progressed to the third round of the Australian Open with a solid display against Egor Gerasimov but this will be a tougher test for him.
- The 22-year-old has now successfully progressed to the third round in Melbourne for the fourth successive season but must win this game to make the round of 16 which would match his best performance here which came last year.
- Making the round of 16 would in fact equal Zverev’s bet ever showing in a Grand Slam on the hard court with him also making that stage of last season’s US Open before he was knocked out by Diego Schwartzman.
THE PREDICTION
Fernando Verdasco put in a great display to claim the scalp of Nikoloz Basilashvili but he will need to go one better if he is to knock out his second seeded player in successive rounds. World number seven Alexander Zverev stands in his way and the German came out on top the last time these two met on the hard court last season. Zverev will have high hopes of achieving his best ever finish in a Grand Slam after two solid performances so far and he can move a step closer to that by overcoming Verdasco.
