- Dan Evans will enter the Australian Open as a seed for the first time in his career at 29 years old as at world number 33 he benefits from a couple of higher-ranked dropouts to seed 30th.
- The current British number one is in the form of his life, buoyed on by the exhilaration of two successive international competitions for Great Britain in which he his level has vastly improved.
- Evans beat the likes of David Goffin and Alex de Minaur in his best tournament performance to date at the ATP Cup to start 2020 off on a high but he most recently lost to Adelaide favourite Andrey Rublev in three sets.
MACKENZIE MCDONALD
- World number 132 Mackenzie McDonald reached a career-high 57th in the ATP world rankings in May of last year after a strong showing at the Barcelona Open, losing in the third round to Daniil Medvedev.
- 24-year-old McDonald came through then world number 87 Andrey Rublev in four sets at last year’s Australian Open before losing to Marin Cilic, also in four.
- The American is clearly capable of bigger things than his current ranking and has reached as far as the round of 16 of a Grand Slam with an excellent run to a four-set defeat by Milos Raonic at Wimbledon 2018.
THE PREDICTION
Dan Evans’ heroic victories for Great Britain over David Goffin and Alex de Minaur at the ATP Cup were nothing short of sensational, but he will have to refocus here as a solo player after the highs of international competition. Despite losing to Andrey Rublev in his last match, Evans took a set off the in-form Russian for the first time since Roberto Bautista Agut managed it, also in defeat, at the Davis Cup last November. Evans’ level coming into the Australian can be read in this way – between beating David Goffin in two sets and losing to Rublev in three. That should see him comfortably come through Mackenzie McDonald here and onto a collision course with world number two Novak Djokovic for a match everyone will be watching.
