TOMMY PAUL
- 22-year-old Tommy Paul came through the qualifiers of the Acapulco Open before coming back from a set down in the first round proper to fellow American Mackenzie McDonald.
- Paul lost to another young American, Frances Tiafoe, in his previous ATP match in the quarter-finals of the Delray Beach Open last week in straight sets.
- That quarter-final exit moved Paul up to 66th in the ATP world rankings, a career high for the youngster as he continues to ride the high of beating Grigor Dimitrov at the Australian Open in January.
ALEXANDER ZVEREV
- After coming through a first set tiebreak against Jason Jung, Alexander Zverev surged through the second to claim a comprehensive win as the second seed here in Mexico.
- The 22-year-old will have plenty to work on from that first match having registered eight double faults over two sets, although 12 aces suggests he felt comfortable enough to work out some kinks.
- World number seven Zverev has played two campaigns at the Acapulco Open before now and thus far has never lost before the semi-finals, losing out to Nick Kyrgios in the final last year.
THE PREDICTION
A fit and firing Alexander Zverev could be an outside shout for the title in Mexico having lost out to Nick Kyrgios here last year. His main opposition will be world number two Rafael Nadal, of course, but that would be quite the final after the German got the better of Nadal at the ATP Finals last November. Tommy Paul is his next opponent but while the American is a battler, he will struggle to take a set here.
