THE LOWDOWN
HEAD-TO-HEAD
Last meeting: N/A
SERENA WILLIAMS
- Six-time US Open champion Serena Williams was rarely in trouble in her round of 16 match against Croatia’s Petra Martic despite having her serve broken for just the third time this tournament.
- Williams’ shot at reaching the final has been given a massive boost by the second and third seeds, Ashleigh Barty and Karolina Pliskova, losing their round of 16 ties.
- The 37-year-old has not lost a US Open quarter-final since 2007 and, on paper, looks destined to meet Naomi Osaka in the final again after their controversial title match at last year’s tournament.
WANG QIANG
- China’s Wang Qiang is one of a handful of players left in the tournament, male or female, to have not dropped a set after her round of 16 victory over the second seed Ashleigh Barty.
- The 27-year-old’s dismissal of Roland-Garros champion Barty will have piqued the interest of the rest of the draw after her first three rounds were against admittedly weaker opponents. The world number 18 fought, and saved, nine break points on her serve to come through in straight sets.
- This is without doubt Wang Qiang’s best year on the WTA tour and she is in uncharted waters at this Grand Slam having never previously made it through to the second week of one.
THE PREDICTION
This is a harder match to call than at first glance, as Wang Qiang clearly exhibits a grit and determination that can frustrate Serena Williams who, at 37 years old, is understandably less mobile than she used to be. No one in their right mind would go against the six-time US Open champion, but the Chinese world number 18 is on an upward curve and could tire Williams out. Serena, of course, can and should win, but this match going to a decider looks the most likely outcome.
