THE LOWDOWN

HEAD-TO-HEAD
Last meeting:
Roger Federer beat Grigor Dimitrov 6-2, 6-2

ROGER FEDERER

  • 38-year-old Roger Federer is through to his 13th quarter-final at the US Open after a masterclass straight-sets win over 15th seed David Goffin.
  • Something has clicked with world number three Federer after his opening two matches were four-set comebacks, and he has completely dismantled the games of two intelligent opponents in Dan Evans and Goffin since.
  • The shock loss of the injured Novak Djokovic opens the five-time US Open champion’s pathway to the final but his potential semi-final opponents, Wawrinka or Medvedev, are both dangerous.

GRIGOR DIMITROV

  • Grigor Dimitrov looks to be enjoying himself out on court for the first time in a while after a frankly dreadful season, and he beat an excellent young player in Alex de Minaur in the round of 16 in straight sets.
  • The world number 78, formerly as high as 3rd in the ATP world rankings, is through to his first quarter-final at Flushing Meadows, although he has enjoyed success in the latter stages of the Australian Open on a number of occasions and reached the semi-finals at Wimbledon in 2014.
  • Dimitrov would likely have picked any other player left in the tournament to face in the quarter-finals over Roger Federer, as the Bulgarian has lost to the world number three in all seven of their career meetings.

THE PREDICTION

This is the fourth time Grigor Dimitrov has had the misfortune of meeting Roger Federer in the quarter-finals of a tournament, and the Bulgarian (nicknamed ‘Baby Fed’ in his younger days) has been well beaten in them all. With seven losses overall, including at two Grand Slams, there is very little to suggest that Dimitrov can even win a set, especially after Federer’s displays in the previous two rounds. Although, the emotions Dimitrov must be feeling at finally performing well in 2019 could give him that bit extra to combat Federer at the beginning.
