- David Goffin has had things his way so far at the Shanghai Masters after a good first-round win over Richard Gasquet was complimented by a retirement from his second-round match by Mikhail Kukushkin.
- The Belgian number one was 6-3, 3-0 up against Kukushkin which offers him a good amount of match practice without expending much energy ahead of his 11th career meeting with Roger Federer.
- World number 14 Goffin has lost to one of the ‘top three’ in five of his last 10 tournaments dating back to Roland-Garros, and it seems he is often there or thereabouts until meeting Messrs Nadal, Djokovic or Federer.
ROGER FEDERER
- Roger Federer was made to work in his first match at the Shanghai Masters but came through a second-set tie-break with Albert Ramos-Vinolas to reach the round of 16.
- The world number three has lost at this stage of the tournament on one previous occasion, to Gael Monfils in 2013, with a 21-5 record here and two titles.
- 38-year-old Federer has played David Goffin 10 times previously and won nine of those matches, including twice this year at Halle and the US Open, and they have played each other at least once each year since 2014.
THE PREDICTION
There is little to be said for David Goffin’s chances against Roger Federer, as he languishes at the wrong end of a 9-1 deficit in their head-to-head, but he has had a kind draw at the Shanghai Masters and could make a game of it. Albert Ramos-Vinolas drove the world number three to a tie-break before Federer made it through in straight sets, but while Goffin’s shot-making is easy on the eye, he lacks the conviction to beat the top three. The Swiss could well get through this with his serve intact.
